    Folks,

It’s pleasing to see some more restrictions being lifted in the community and life starting to become more ‘normal’. With a bit of luck and continued community testing, things will hopefully get back to where we were, sometime soon. Personally, I am sitting in isolation after submitting to a precautionary COVID-19 test and am waiting for the results.

With all these restrictions in place, the committee, as have many other association committees, have decided to postpone the AGM until such time as we are able to get together safely and importantly, legally.

Under MITIE’s constitution, we are not permitted to hold a virtual AGM and must afford the opportunity for members to attend in person should they wish. That notwithstanding, we are preparing to release the reports in an interim state in August, in the interests of transparent operations. The final reports will be delivered at the AGM.

As was mentioned late last year, Julian Ridden was no longer able to serve due to time constraints and a change in work circumstances. Anthony England has also had to step away more recently. Consequently we had two casual vacancies to fill.

The committee debated how best to proceed and decided to approach the two other candidates from the 2019/2020 steering committee election to gauge their interest in taking up the positions they had nominated for. At the time there were only a few votes between them at the closing of the ballot.

I’m pleased to announce that Michael Smith (St Aloysius’ College, Sydney) and Wayne Russell (Calrossy Anglican School, Tamworth) have accepted the casual vacancy appointments, which will be in place until the next AGM. They join the committee as general members.

Further, Tanya Bilka has agreed to take on the Member Services role within the committee, looking to increase engagement and services outside of the very important term conferences and forums which are part of the MITIE DNA.

For those not in the know, especially the members that may have joined over the recent months, the committee is now made up of the following:

    • President: Ally Eddy (Giant Steps Australia, NSW)
    • Vice President: David Nichols (Central Coast Grammar School, NSW)
    • Treasurer: Nathan Mares, (Roseville College, NSW)
    • Secretary: Matthew Gausden (Somerville, QLD)
    • Committee Member: Tanya Bilka (Christian Brothers College, SA)
    • Committee Member: Michael Smith (St Aloysius’ College, NSW)
    • Committee Member: Wayne Russell (Calrossy Anglican School, NSW)

If you have any questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

    Kind Regards,

    Ally Eddy
    MITIE President

    Hi Folks,

We hope that everyone is getting through these tough times. It’s certainly been a rough ride the past few months with fires, floods and a global pandemic.

During this physical distancing period, it’s been really important that we stay connected and the MITIE forums and community have been invaluable in supporting that. Those important conversations and connections are still going on, and while we haven’t been able to hold term conferences, we are still all keeping in touch.

While restrictions are starting to be loosened by the various authorities, the committee feels we can’t yet start planning when we can get together again in person.

However, in lieu of being able to get together, we’re going to do something a little different, at least for MITIE.

On August 13th, we’re going to hold the first MITIE National E-Conference. We are busily putting the agenda together and look to cover some great topics that will appeal to the Teaching, Learning and the Technical amongst us. And it will be timed to cover all the time zones, not just the eastern coast.

We’ve got some fantastic partners (such as Microsoft, Amazon Web Services & Google) on board, and we’ve teamed up with Education Horizons Group (EHG) to help with the logistics and tap into their experience around online conferences. And best of all, we’ll be making it free to all members, and anyone else, to attend. All from the comfort of your office chair.

If you have something you want to hear about or wish to present something yourself, please let us know via this form 5. We may not be able to include it this time around, but we will keep it on file for when things get back to normal.

For now, ‘Save the Date!’ and we’ll send out an invite shortly for you to register your attendance.

    Regards,

    Ally Eddy
    MITIE President

MITIE is very pleased to announce that we are now able to offer discounted online courses and exams to MITIE Members.

To celebrate the initial training offering, MITIE will also subsidise a number of ITIL and PRINCE2 course and exam combinations to members who get in early. This subsided offer is being released in limited numbers and we encourage anyone thinking of doing ITIL4 or PRINCE2 training to get in quick.

To obtain a list of courses available, please visit the MITIE Store and login with your MITIE username and password.

If you continue to have logon issues, please reach out to us via email.

The course list currently includes ITIL4, MSP and PRINCE2, all with accredited exam partners so you know the certification you receive will be recognised.

These exams do not require attendance at a training facility and can be completed outside business hours or in working from home situations.

Being fully accredited qualifications, there are time frames for when a course must be completed and the exam administered. These are listed against each course and do vary for each certification.

We will continue to enhance our offerings as available on the full list of courses and course information.

    Kind Regards,
    Matthew Gausden
    MITIE Secretary

MITIE offers many opportunities for members to engage with, and learn from each other, such as term conferences, the online forum and a host of other initiatives. Building on this work, MITIE commenced a peer mentoring program in February this year to allow members to engage one-on-one with a mentor to support them in their professional development and growth.

Nathan Mares, who is a mentor and one of the program’s coordinators, said the peer mentoring program provides a great opportunity to “leverage the knowledge” of the MITIE community.

“Some of our members have decades of experience and have seen how the industry has changed over that time,” said Nathan who is the IT Director at Roseville College on Sydney’s North Shore. “We also have members who are fairly new in their ICT roles, as well as those stepping up into leadership positions, and it seemed like a mentoring program was a good way to share and build the expertise between schools and across the MITIE membership.”

The program, which is sponsored by Corporate Partners Next Technologies and EdSmart, was initially promoted via workshops last December and in January this year, resulting in 15 mentees nominating to be paired up with volunteer mentors.

Both mentees and mentors commit to a six-month arrangement, however mentor and co-coordinator of the program, Ally Eddy, said he sees his mentoring partnership continuing.

“It’s an ongoing professional dialogue,” said Ally who is the ICT Manager of Giant Steps Australia, a school for students with Autism in Sydney. “Since the start of the year I’ve had three video conferences with my mentee Wayne and I’ve just spent two days at his school in the term holidays.”

“We don’t follow a formal mentoring structure as such, but have engaged in a natural professional conversation, sharing our ideas and learning from each other,” he said. “Now we have established this connection, it makes sense to keep chatting and Wayne will come down to Sydney in July to see how we work at Giant Steps.”

Wayne, who has been in his ICT leadership role at Calrossy Anglican School in Tamworth for about two and a half years, is finding great value in the program.

“I’ve had a previous ICT role in Bourke for a few years, and have come from a technical background, but I thought the program would allow me to get more specific advice and direction from someone who has been working at the leadership level in a school,” said Wayne. “Learning from someone with Ally’s experience has been excellent.”

“I’ve found the members in MITIE are so willing to share their expertise, and being a regional school, the mentoring program helps to alleviate the tyranny of distance,” he said. “It’s been really helpful to get a different perspective and to understand the challenges other schools face and how they have overcome these challenges.”

Program participants receive preparatory training with facilitator Lynne Stone, the former principal of St Catherine’s Waverley. Lynne has extensive experience in delivering mentoring programs from her role as National Partnerships Coordinator at AISNSW, and in her work as an education and leadership consultant.

“The training guides mentors in setting expectations around the program, the roles of mentees and mentors and how to establish appropriate boundaries,” said Nathan. “We’ve had two workshops in Sydney and Melbourne and are hoping to offer a further workshop in Queensland later in the year.”

“We already have a number of mentees who have put their hands up for the next round which is very positive,” he said.

Nathan’s mentee Dane Marcus from The King’s School is finding the program beneficial.

“It’s a great way of connecting with someone you wouldn’t normally have contact with,” Dane said. “We’ve been able to discuss our industry, positions, problems and wins, and the program also allows us to share ideas, plans and knowledge.”

“It definitely allows us to become a stronger community,” he said.

Nathan said the benefits flow both ways.

“As a mentor, it’s interesting to hear how things are done at another school and challenges you to think differently about how you operate,” he said. “I get to think about my own principles and approaches in a particular area, and how I handle situations. It allows me to reflect on my own practice.”

Expressions of interest are open for both mentors and mentees. For more information contact contactus@mitie.edu.au.

Thank you to our corporate sponsors who have made this mentoring program possible:

The Steering committee received a very strong set of expressions of interest to fill the casual vacancy created following Mike Parker’s resignation from the committee.

These EOIs were considered at our committee meeting on Thursday 14th March 2019 and the committee is pleased to announce that Tanya Bilka has accepted our offer to join us as a committee member.

For the past 3 years, Tanya has been Leader of Learning Technologies at Christian Brothers College Adelaide. Her role oversees pedagogical technologies within the classroom, and has expanded to cover systems support/administration, staff training, data integrity, and advising/participating in the formation of the college’s ICT strategy. She is reviewing the College’s systems infrastructure, keeping it abreast of new digital solutions on the market, and networking with other schools/colleges to share knowledge and experience in this area with the aim of raising the standards of ICT service provision within the College.

At the MITIE term 3 conference in Adelaide in 2018, Tanya gave one of the best presentations of the day on “Selecting an LMS - A Journey in Learning”.

Tanya’s vision for the future of MITIE includes making sure that management and user experience concepts are well covered, as well as attracting a broader range of less-familiar vendors and products, and highlighting local (Australian) companies who provide these services. She would like to see more frequent casual meet-ups (drinks, nibbles, shared meals) that would allow members to speak more often with other professionals; particularly useful occasions if members are isolated in their role. She’d also like to see more obvious grouping/categorising within the forums, to make it easier to contact people with relevant knowledge or similar experience.

The committee thanks the other MITIE members who submitted an EOI. It is out intention to engage with these members and the broader MITIE community to expand on the services we offer. We will do this through the Member Services Standing Committee under the leadership of MITIE’s Vice President, Dave Nichols (@dnichols).

MITIE is a not-for-profit incorporated association that exists for its members. In response to the great interest shown by members, MITIE commenced a peer mentoring program during the recent summer break with events held in Sydney and Melbourne. An event is currently being finalized for Queensland members.

The MITIE peer mentoring program provides an opportunity for up and coming members to benefit from the experienced of members in established roles. Events are run by an experienced facilitator who covers the roles and expectations of mentors and mentees.

Pairing of mentors and mentees from these events has been completed, marking the commencement of the second stage of this exciting initiative to assist professionals who support the use of information and communication technologies in education.

A big thanks to our commercial members, in particular Next Technologies and EdSmart, whose support enables MITIE members to participate in this professional development event at no cost.

Keep an eye out for information on the event planned for Queensland.
